Do we know this morning where the term Scapegoat comes from?
We use the term today to describe when a person is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others. Eg: ‘they used her as a scapegoat.’
Well it originally comes from the Old Testament law of Moses when each year on the Day of Atonement the High priest would lay his hands on the head of the Goat and confess the Sins of the people were in order that they were transferred ‘By God’ from the people and onto the Goat. (Hence scapegoat) The Goat was then taken away far into the wilderness by a ‘fit person’, in order that if anyone looked for their sins they could no longer be found.
Today is Good Friday and we remember how this morning the High Priest Caiaphas and the priests and rulers pronounced Jesus Guilty even though he had done No Wrong Ever!. But more than this God the Father Himself now transfers our Sins on to the head of Jesus.
Isaiah 53:6 tells us “The Lord has laid on Him the sins of us all.”
and again The apostle Paul when writing to the Corinthian church
2 Corinthians 5:21:
“For God Made Christ who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ”
As we remember back the ‘fit man’ carrying away the goat on his shoulders with the the sins of All the people laid on it, we see the parallel,,,, the fulfilment….the shadow cast down the ages as we now see Jesus loaded with the sins of the Whole World! Yours, mine, Everyone’s.
He was carrying a Cross which has ‘our name’ written on it.
Today if we lay our hands upon the Head of Jesus and Confess our Sins to Him sincerely turning away from the wrongs we have committed, He will Today right now take away the very barrier of Sin the Wall that separates us from our God. Never, Ever, remembering our wrongs anymore.
This is what is
‘Good about Friday’

Lord God I have heard your quiet voice speaking to me personally through this message. Father I am truly sorry for all the things I know I have done wrong, and now confess them to you. Lord Jesus you have paid the price for my sins, and not only are you willing to forgive them but you promise never to remember them anymore. As if this were not enough, you also have promised to put Your Own Holy Spirit inside me as a guarantee, and to help me live every day as you want me to live. Hear my prayer.
